Aunty Lani’s Travel Tips: 💗 Respect Hōʻōpi‘i and Our People

I like have one little heart-to-heart with you folks today. You know, plenty people ask me about going to Hōʻōpiʻi Falls — oh the Instagram pictures look real pretty yeah? But let me tell you from the heart… please, no go.

Why? Well, I going be honest — that little country road is lined with local families’ homes. The parking get super tight, cars block driveways, and all the people coming in and out… it’s hard on the kūpuna (elders) who live there, and on the keiki (kids) trying to ride their bikes or play outside. It’s frustrating, and it makes pilikia (problems) we really don’t need.

Plus, Hōʻōpiʻi is not an official visitor spot. No facilities, no trash cans, and sometimes people get hurt. The rescue crews gotta come — that means they not available somewhere else.

So please, respect the people who live there. Kauaʻi not Disneyland — it’s our home. If you looking for waterfalls you can properly visit, with good parking and safer access, I get plenty other recommendations for you! Come talk story with me.

Mahalo nui for caring about our island and our people. That’s what makes you a true aloha ambassador.
